Gambled Genesis - The Creative Studio for
Australian Artist and Musician Susan Gamble.
Captivated by the alchemy of sound + spectrum, this site houses many of my creative projects. Please have a wander...
Susan Gamble is a Fine Artist, Musician, Composer, Designer & Experimental Filmmaker.
Having inherited a passion for both the Visual and Performing Arts, I am happiest when ensconced in a creative project - be it painting & drawing, sitting at the piano letting my fingers 'go for a wander' or climbing a mountain weighed down only by a camera around my neck.
I love the individual qualities of each art form but by equal measure enjoy exploring the symbiotic relationship between art forms and the various ways in which they can be combined & configured to create a richer, more dynamic whole.
My work has been awarded, exhibited in art galleries, screened in film festivals and performed live in new media festivals and theatres.
'Gambled Genesis' is a positive spin on my surname.
Each time I 'Gamble' on my creativity I produce an original creation.
Aesthetically I have taken inspiration from two of my other loves... I possess two very green thumbs and I enjoy collecting and re-imagining vintage curios. Thus the name & visual identity, I hope, reflects this earthy & patined, hands on ethos.

I have always loved the visceral and tactile immediacy of drawing & painting. My process has been described as ‘sculptural’ in nature, often starting with a responsive dynamic splash of paint and then going through a process of 'drying-off', ‘cutting in’ and refining. This approach encourages me to engage in a freeing exploration between additivie and subractive elements that respond to the intial painterly 'object' and capturing the essence of the viewed body. This interplay in turn allows me to develeop areas of representational accuracy whilst keeping others ‘abstract’ by way of their raw brevity.
A flurry of paint, pastel and pencil applied to a large surface
strewn on the floor best describes my life drawing process!
A regular attendee of life drawing sessions since adulescence,
I enjoy the freeing immediacy and limitless change of form,
serving both as visual exercise & to develop finished art.
Winner of a Boroondara City Arts Grant Prize in 2016 a life drawings series featured as a sound & mixed-media installation titled 'Line Up' in the Kew Court House and in 2017 the mixed media nude 'Leaning Female' won Best In Show in the Roberts McCubbin Art Show. Works have hung in a variety of exhibitions.
The challenge of capturing another's spirit has always entrigued me.
The first and formative portraits I made in my youth were a drawing series
of my brother's childhood growth, one for every year of his life.
Now, portraiture allows me to look for interesting characters, to engage with them and to
draw attention to interesting
Australians who have made a contribution to the Arts &/or Science.
The portrait of Baritone Gary Rowley hung in 'Hidden Faces'- the Victorian 'Salon des Refuses' Exhibition in the Hilton Hotel & and the portrait of Dr Joseph Talia appeared in the Leader newspaper.
Fine Art aesthetics applied to electronic design + print media + life!
Be it a poster or a room, a website or a garden, great design for me is universally underpinned by a strong skeletal structure which is then softened by seemingly organic layers of form, texture and colour, each progressively revealing themselves - literally making you want to stay & play, to explore and revisit the space or object again and again.
I have always loved contemplating the boundaries of a creative problem and how artfully, I can bend or break those parameters to produce something unique and appealing.
My sence of form, colour & layout has been employed, using a variety of mediums, to produce novel design solutions including: theatre posters & sets, landscape & room designs, jewellery ranges, websites & package designs.
Enamoured by the temporal interplay between sound & vision
I enjoy exploring the poetics of light, shadow & colour,
in synthesis with the texture of noise, beat and melody.
But further, as a means to harnessing the dynamics of space and the spectacle of theatre &
live music performances, films are re-contextualized and presented as multi-screen
projections in darkened spaces and sound-tracked live.
My films have screened in music & media festivals, in gallery installations & theatre productions, on television & have been finalists in national awards.
Festival AV performances include: 'Electrofringe' - Newcastle, 'You Are Here' - Canberra, 'This Is Not Art' - Newcastle, 'Sustainable Living Festival' - Fed Square Melb, 'Peats Ridge Festival' (Land of Hopeless Utopians 360 degree Solar Powered Projections Dome) Regional N.S.W, 'Folk, Rhythm & Life Festival' Regional Vic, High & Dry Music Festival - Hawkesbury River N.S.W, Renaissance Festival Regional Vic, 'Melbourne Fringe Festival', 'Darebin Music Feast' Melb, 'Gertrude St Projection Festival' Melb, 'Electundra' - Melb, 'A Poke in the Eye is a Good Distraction for a Ringing Ear' Sound Series Conical Gallery, Melb.
Music & performance has always been a part of my life as singing predates memory!
Progressive training in classical piano, violin & voice lead to tertiary and A.M.E.B qualifications in music and the dramatic arts and further studies in Italy after winning the Nino Sanciolo Prize.
I have performed in a wide variety of contexts including: operas, theatre in education, vocal ensembles, orchestras, an original post-rock band, feature films, TV commercials, music videos, radio and theatres.
I also compose, arrange and make sound designs. Current Projects include:
